What Monti Is

Monti is Rome’s oldest district and one of its most vibrant today. Imagine narrow cobbled lanes, artisan boutiques, vintage stores, tiny piazzas and cafés, all set between the Colosseum and Trajan’s Markets. It feels like a village in the very center of the city and it’s widely considered one of Rome’s coolest neighborhoods for young artists and creatives. Learn more about the rione’s character on Turismo Roma or Italia.it.

The Suburra in ancient Rome

Two thousand years ago, much of Monti was the Suburra, a dense, working‑class quarter just outside the political stage of the Forums. Senators and power‑brokers would step out of the Forum — the official space of politics — and slip into the Suburra to drink, cut deals and visit brothels. People joked that the real politics happened in the Suburra. It was noisy and lively, packed with high insulae apartment blocks, workshops, taverns and performers, and it had a reputation for smoke, scandals and the occasional fire. That bustling, layered energy still echoes in Monti’s lanes today. For a deeper read, see Wikipedia – Suburra and this overview of the rione’s history on Turismo Roma.

Anchor points: Piazza della Madonna dei Monti (about 2–3 min walk) • Via Urbana (you are on it) • Via del Boschetto (about 1–2 min walk)
